Steroids effects on bones

Each user experiences their own unique feelings when using steroids and coming off the drug. When someone chooses to stop using they can experience a variety of withdrawal symptoms linked to addiction. Symptoms can include mood swings, fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite, insomnia, reduced sex drive, the desire to take more steroids, and depression. Evidence for steroid addiction is certainly not as strong as it is for other drugs like cocaine or heroin. Though it is clear that people develop a tolerance and dependence on them and willingly experience negative consequences when using steroids - both of which are signs for drug dependence.

"For years I had been a "junkie"--addicted to prescription and over the counter drugs. used oral and topical anti-inflammatory corticosteroids for 9 years to suppress my eczema/psoriasis. The steroids' side effect nearly killed me and did nothing to cure my eczema. The side effects caused me to swell-up like a balloon and triggered terrible mood swings from deep depression to nasty outburst our rages. Functioning of vital organs such as my liver, kidneys, lungs and spleen were nearly shut down and I thought I would die." Shirley

The recent study used precise new imaging methods to look at the bone structure of 30 women placed on oral steroids for three months or longer. In particular, a high resolution CT scan was used to observe the micro architecture of the women’s bones and compare that to 60 control patients who didn’t take steroids. What’s fascinating was the standard gross metric called a DEXA scan was not accurate enough to show any differences between the women. However, the more sophisticated measures did show huge and scary changes. The women on steroids literally had evidence that their bones were being eaten away and rearranged by the steroids.
